WHAT IS AN ORTHOTIST?

An orthotist is a specialist trained to measure, design, fabricate or fit any device which is used to correct a disability or provide support. An orthotic device is typically prescribed by a licensed physician and an orthotist will take the referrals. The orthotist will custom-make a device for the patient. An orthotic device is prescribed for sports injuries, deformities, scoliosis, multiple sclerosis or any reason involving the loss of function of a body part. Orthotic devices can be used for the back, neck, foot, or other parts as deemed necessary by the physician. Please contact your physician for more information.

THORACIC LUMBAR SACRAL ORTHOSIS:

After spine surgery, the Thoracic-Lumbar-Sacral Orthosis device stabilizes the spine. To put the device on, carefully log roll onto your stomach while lining up your back with the back section of the brace. From there, carefully log roll onto the back of the brace, making any necessary adjustments. The front section should be placed making sure that the front overlaps the back section. Connect the front and back with the velcro straps and adjust both sides as needed, starting with the bottom straps and working upwards until the brace is snug.

SCOLIOSIS ORTHOSIS:

A scoliosis orthosis is a brace worn to straighten out the spinal column. Hold the brace and stand behind your child, reaching around with one arm on each side. The brace should be wide enough to slip on. The opening should be in the middle of the back while the brace faces straight ahead. Your child should lie on their side as you push the opening together until tight, then snap the buckles closed. To undo, the straps should be loosened and held open so the child can step backward out of it. Please contact your orthotist for more information.

ANKLE FOOT ORTHOSIS:

If muscle function in the foot or ankle is limited as a result of stroke, spinal cord injury or other conditions such as cerebral palsy or multiple sclerosis, an ankle-foot orthosis can be recommended by your orthotist. Your orthotist will help design the orthosis so it fits you comfortably and will discuss how to handle and care for the device. The device supports weak or wasted limbs and contracts muscles into a more normal position while immobilizing the ankle and lower leg in the cases of arthritis or fracture. You should consult your orthotist with any questions or concerns you may have.

FOOT ORTHOTICS:

A foot orthotic is a custom-made shoe insert. It allows for normal foot movement and is ideal for people who have suffered an injury or those who play sports with a high amount of movement and pressure.

The orthotic should be worn an hour on day one then increased by an hour daily. Stop use immediately if you experience cramping, bruising, or aching.

Contact your doctor to find the best type of shoe, and keep all follow-up appointments.

CERVICAL COLLARS:

A cervical collar, or neck brace, is designed to support the head or spinal cord during the healing of an injury.
To place the collar around the neck, slide it along the chest and into position. A second person holds the collar’s velcro tab and slides the right shoulder arch into position on the patient’s right shoulder. The jaw support should be aligned with the patient’s jaw and sternum, not beyond.

The collar should not clamp the patient’s teeth together or pressurize the neck.

Talk with your orthotist if you have questions or concerns.

SILICONE LINERS FITTING:

A silicone liner is designed to form the foundation of both comfort and performance. They work to stabilize soft tissues, minimize pistoning or stretching, and aid in the improvement of circulation and provide added comfort. A silicone liner should fit with the same level of comfort with which a shoe would fit your foot.

If you have questions about whether silicone liners are right for you, please contact your orthotist.
